Marketing Budgets for BC Small Businesses in 2026

What is a realistic marketing budget in British Columbia this year? Here is a breakdown based on what is actually working.

One of the most common questions we get from BC business owners is some version of: "How much should I actually be spending on marketing?" It is a fair question, and most of the answers online are either too generic to be useful or based on US market data that does not translate to BC's cost structure.

Here is a realistic breakdown based on what we see working across BC in 2026.

The General Rule of Thumb

Most growth-focused small businesses in BC should be allocating somewhere between 7 and 12 percent of gross revenue to marketing. Businesses in more competitive categories like food and beverage, or businesses actively trying to break into a new market, often need to push toward the higher end of that range, sometimes temporarily higher during a launch phase.

Established businesses with strong repeat customer bases can often operate closer to 5 percent, since a larger portion of their revenue comes from retention rather than new acquisition.

What This Looks Like in Real Numbers

For a BC small business doing $500,000 in annual revenue, that means a realistic marketing budget lands somewhere between $35,000 and $60,000 per year, or roughly $3,000 to $5,000 per month.

For a business doing $1,000,000 in annual revenue, that range moves to $70,000 to $120,000 per year.

The number matters less than the structure behind it. A poorly structured $10,000 monthly budget will underperform a well-structured $3,500 campaign every time.

Where BC Businesses Get This Wrong

Treating marketing as an expense instead of an investment

Businesses that view marketing purely as a cost center tend to cut it first when times get tight, which is exactly when consistent marketing matters most. The businesses that keep growing through slow periods are usually the ones that protected their marketing budget rather than pausing it entirely.

Spreading budget too thin across too many channels

We regularly see BC small businesses trying to run Instagram ads, Google ads, email marketing, and content production simultaneously with a budget that is only realistically enough to do one of those well. The result is mediocre performance everywhere instead of strong performance somewhere.

No clear campaign structure

A defined budget without a defined objective is just spending. The businesses getting the most out of their marketing dollars in BC are running structured campaigns with one goal at a time, whether that is a launch, a rebrand, or a growth push, rather than an undifferentiated monthly retainer.

How to Set Your Own Budget

The right budget is the one that is large enough to execute a real campaign properly, and structured clearly enough that you can actually measure whether it worked.
