In-House Marketing Hire vs a Campaign Partner

Most businesses compare the wrong numbers. Here is what an in-house hire actually costs once everything is accounted for.

Every growing company eventually asks the same question: should we hire our first in-house marketer, or keep working with an outside partner? The answer usually comes down to a comparison that most business owners never actually run properly.

Here is what the real numbers look like once you account for everything a single in-house hire actually costs.

The Salary Is the Smallest Part of the Number

A mid-level marketing manager in BC typically commands a base salary between $65,000 and $95,000 depending on experience and scope. That number feels manageable on its own. It is not the real number.

Add employer-side payroll taxes, benefits, a laptop and software stack, a portion of office overhead, recruiting and onboarding costs, and the ramp-up period where a new hire is still learning your business before producing real output. A conservative fully-loaded cost for that same $80,000 salary lands closer to $110,000 to $130,000 in year one.

One Hire Cannot Cover the Full Function

Marketing is not one skill. A single in-house hire is rarely strong across strategy, copywriting, video production, paid media, design, and analytics simultaneously. Most in-house marketing managers end up specializing in one or two of these areas and outsourcing the rest anyway, which means the true cost of "going in-house" often includes a second layer of contractor or agency spend on top of the salary.

The real comparison is never one salary against one invoice. It is one salary plus the gaps it does not cover, against a team that already covers all of it.

What a Campaign Partner Actually Replaces

A properly structured campaign partner replaces the need for a strategist, a copywriter, a video and photo team, a designer, and a project manager, all coordinated toward the same objective. For a business investing $7,499 to $15,000 on a quarterly growth or awareness campaign, that is materially less than the fully-loaded cost of even a single mid-level in-house hire, and it comes with a team that has already solved these problems for other businesses.

Where In-House Actually Wins

This is not a blanket argument against hiring. In-house makes sense when marketing has become a full-time, permanent function for the business, when institutional brand knowledge needs to live inside the company, or when the volume of ongoing content and campaign work genuinely exceeds what a single external partner can support. Businesses at that scale are usually running seven figures or more in revenue with a dedicated growth budget to match.

The Honest Framework

Most businesses evaluating this decision are comparing the wrong numbers. Once the full cost of an in-house hire is on the table, a well-run campaign partnership is rarely the more expensive option, it is usually the more complete one.
